Lion has achieved an environmental landmark at its XXXX Brewery in the Australian city of Brisbane.
The facility, which since 2019 has been 25% powered by a combination of solar panels and power purchase agreements [PPA], is now being fully powered by renewable electricity. The increase to 100% is the result of a new PPA signed last month with BP.
The extra energy required is produced at a solar farm 200km north at Woolooga in Queensland.
The brewery, which produces Lion’s XXXX lager brand, has an annual capacity of 2.5m hectolitres. According to Lion, which has set 2050 as its target for achieving “a net-zero value chain”, the agreement with BP represents the removal of around 138,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from the site.
