Pernod Ricard’s Irish Distillers division has commenced the phasing out of gift boxes for flagship Irish whiskey brand Jameson.
The move, which forms part of a secondary-packaging review, has as its aim the removal of around 4m gift-box units for the brand by the end of 2025. The unit has set the same date for ensuring all of its secondary packaging “will be recyclable, reusable, compostable or removed entirely”.
As well as Jameson, the approach will apply to the Powers, Spot and Knappogue Castle brands.
“Gift packs containing secondary items such as hipflasks or drinking glasses will be 100% recyclable and FSC [Forest Steward Council] certified,” Irish Distillers said today. “Any new products will be put through an eco-design tool to ensure that they are designed according to the key principles of Pernod Ricard’s circular making [sic] strategy.”
Eight months ago, Pernod Ricard confirmed plans to spend EUR50m [then-US$52.6m] on improving the efficiency of on-site energy generation at Irish Distillers’ production facility in Midleton near Cork, as well as recycling waste heat. The investment, which aims to phase out ‘scope 1’ and ‘scope 2’ carbon emissions by the end of 2026, will then go towards securing energy from renewable sources.
