What is deterring consumers from buying alcohol in global travel retail? – Market Intel

In the Mediterranean, price & promotions dominate the reasons for not buying alcohol. Product assortment is the second-largest barrier, followed by customs allowances and carrying extra items.

In its latest exclusive alcohol shopper analysis for Global Drinks Intel, Switzerland-based research agency m1nd-set focuses on the barriers to alcohol purchases in the global travel retail channel, focussing particularly on Italian travellers and the Mediterranean region.

The main reason travellers give for not making travel retail purchases is that the prices are higher in the channel than at home. Other barriers to purchase, in equal measure, are the absence of any promotional activity, a traveller's lack of intention to buy anything and their unwillingness to carry more items.When analysing by region, apathy emerges as the top barrier among European store visitors, whose main reason for sidestepping GTR outlets is that they simply don’t want to shop. Preferring not to carry more items is the biggest barrier for shoppers in both the Asia Pacific and Africa
