Canada-based Moosehead Breweries has confirmed it will cease production of bottled beer at the end of this year, in response to what it calls consumer preferences.

The New Brunswick-based brewer said that bottled production of its Moosehead brand will end in December, with limited quantities available into early 2026. The company has already stopped international shipments of bottles, earmarking future investment into the canning infrastructure at its brewery.

To mark the transition, Moosehead has launched a domestic marketing campaign. ‘The Last Bottle’ offers one consumer the chance to take home the final bottle off the production line. Canadians can enter by sharing their stories via Moosehead’s website, with a winner selected in late October.

“When I started my career at Moosehead 32 years ago, 90% of the beer being sold in Canada was in bottles,” said Moosehead Breweries CEO, Andrew Oland.”Today, consumer preference has shifted.”

“This decision to move away from bottles hasn’t been taken lightly… But ultimately, we’re following the lead set by Canadians, who have made it clear that cans are their preferred way of enjoying not just our beer – but every beer across the category.”

Industry-wide, cans are increasingly favoured for their lower production and transport costs, as well as superior protection against light and oxygen, which can damage the liquid.

Last week, Garage Beer received financial backing from US investment firm Durational Capital Management, with the proceeds lined up to support a nationwide expansion for the US brand.
