The move makes Nc’nean “the first whisky distillery in Scotland to offer its own remote bottle return scheme for website customers”.

Independent scotch whisky producer Nc’nean is offering consumers in the UK the opportunity to return their bottles for refill.

The company, which has been operational since 2017 and secured B Corp accreditation two years ago, has kicked off the offer this week. Consumers who buy a bottle of the namesake brand online will receive a free-post return label to allow them to send the empty bottle back to the distillery for refilling.

According to Nc’nean, the move would save around 280g of carbon per return.

“If every bottle of whisky bought from a distillery’s website in Scotland could be returned for refilling, the collective carbon savings would be enormous,” said founder Annabel Thomas. “It’s an opportunity to significantly reduce waste and protect the environment – as fierce protectors of nature, it’s an initiative we are proud to lead.”

Last month, Diageo lined up a limited roll-out of what it claimed is the “world’s lightest whisky glass bottle” for blended scotch Johnnie Walker. The design for the 180g pack has been made available to the rest of the spirits industry through a royalty-free licence by the brand owner.
