Diageo has lined up a limited roll-out of what it claims to be the “world’s lightest whisky glass bottle” for blended scotch Johnnie Walker.

The packaging, which excluding the closure weighs 180g, will be showcased with a one-off iteration of the blend. A total of 888 units of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ultra will go on sale globally next year at an SRP of GBP1,000 (US$1,300).

The brand owner confirmed that these will be the only units to be produced, while the design has been made available to the wider industry through a royalty-free licence.

The bottle is the result of a five-year project run by Diageo with unspecified glassmakers to investigate “what luxury, lighter-weight, lower-carbon bottles of the future could look like”. The limited nature of the release of the blend, featuring liquid from distilleries including Brora, Oban, Royal Lochnager along with “a variety of ‘ghost whiskies'”, is because the technology to produce at scale is “not yet available”.

“This new, lightweight bottle … demonstrates what is possible when it comes to lightweighting glass,” said global brand director Jennifer English. “We will continue applying these learnings across our range, taking more progressive strides as we look to the future of Scotch.”

In late July, Brockmans unveiled a 500g bottle for roll-out to all markets for its namesake gin brand.
