Don Q rum owner Destilería Serrallés has followed December’s departure of Philippe Brechot with the appointment of Martin Guzman as its next CEO.

The Puerto Rico-based, family-owned company confirmed late yesterday (16 September) that Guzman (below) has assumed the lead position this month. He replaces Brechot, who stepped away at the end of last year, having held the reins for almost nine years.

Guzman was described by Serrallés as “bringing more than two decades of experience leading global organisations, executing growth strategies”. The executive’s career to-date includes almost 15 years with Bacardi, whose rum production operations are also based in Puerto Rico. Starting as Latin America VP of operations in Mexico in early 2009, he spent time in Hong Kong, Dubai and Miami with the rum rival, finishing off with six years (2018-2023) as North America senior VP of operations,

Beforehand, he also worked for Pernod Ricard across a range of management roles in Mexico from 1998 to 2007, and joins Serrallés from Finlays Solutions, where he has been global COO since May last year.

“Martin’s arrival marks a new chapter in the history of Destilería Serrallés,” a spokesperson for the board of directors said. “His international experience and broad business perspective complement the strength of our organisation, supporting the continued execution of our growth strategy and the advancement of our brands.

“His leadership will help us build on our accomplishments while preserving the legacy and values that have distinguished Serrallés for generations.”

Elsewhere in the rum category, Pernod Ricard’s Canadian affiliate, Corby Spirit & Wine, offloaded the Lamb’s brand last month in a transaction valued at just under US$28m.
