- Sales from twelve months to end of December increase by 4.1% (reported) to EUR1.23bn (US$1.31bn)
- Flagships Freixenet cava climbs 4% on 2022, prosecco Mionetto boasts 11% sales bump
Twelve months after booking a new full-year sales record of EUR1.18m – up 8.5% on 2021, the group, which details its results on a reported basis that includes foreign exchange impacts, saw sales last year rise by 4.1% to EUR1.23bn (US$1.31bn). The privately-owned company, which is not obliged to issue commentary on its financial performance, saw its overall sparkling wine operations deliver a 6% year-on-year sales lift, joined by spirits, which includes Mangaroca Batida coconut liqueur and Wodka Gorbatchow, at +11%.
Conversely, Henkell Freixenet’s wine business slipped by 8%.
While the company’s two largest brands, Freixenet and Mionetto, came in up by 4% and 11%, respectively, the pair were eclipsed by stronger growth rates from the I Heart Wines portfolio (+12%) as well as higher-priced French wines Alfred Gratien (+16%) and Gratien & Meyer (+13%).
Geographically, the Germany, Austria & Switzerland reporting region was the standout, delivering a 12% climb, although the smaller – for Henkell Freixenet – regions of the Americas and Asia Pacific contributed sales declines, the latter by 17% although this was blamed in part of currency exchange rate fluctuations.
“We see opportunities relating to … the changing behaviour of Gen Z consumers,” said CEO Andreas Brokemper. “The ‘aperitivo moment’ and low- & no-alcohol trends are key opportunities for us.”
Citing figures from IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, Henkell Freixenet claims to hold 9% share of the ‘sparkling wine excluding champagne and Lambrusco’ market, worldwide.
