Mast-Jägermeister has opened a EUR17.6m (US$20.6m) barrel storage facility in Kamenz, Germany, for its namesake herbal liqueur brand.

The 5,000-square-metre building has the capacity to hold up to 225 barrels, and will be used to mature the Jägermeister base spirit. The brand owner said the project aims “to future-proof barrel storage – an essential step in the production process – making it robust, efficient and fit for the long term”.

The site, which is 170km south of Berlin and close to the border with Poland, is part-powered by solar energy and had initially been tipped to be carbon neutral – Global Drinks Intel has asked the company whether this has been achieved.

“We are deliberately investing in our production base,” said Mast-Jägermeister’s board chair, Michael Volke. “The new barrel storage strengthens the quality and resilience of our supply chain and creates the conditions for continued growth from within.”

Last month, the Wolfenbüttel-headquartered company began producing some of the green bottles for the herbal liqueur using hybrid-furnace technology. Initial results indicated that the hybrid furnace reduces the carbon emissions created from the production process by around 60% per bottle, compared with “conventional glass manufacturing”.
