A day after a US federal court ruled against President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs on all imports into the country, an appeals court has reinstated them for the time being.
On Wednesday (28 May), the Court of International Trade determined that the President did not have the authority to impose broad import tariffs on nearly every country, giving the White House ten days to end the measures. However, following an appeal by Trump, the Federal Circuit has now issued a temporary stay on the court’s order, pending further litigation.
Trump posted yesterday (30 May) on social media platform TruthSocial: “The US Court of International Trade incredibly ruled against the United States of America on desperately needed Tariffs but, fortunately, the full 11 Judge Panel on the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Court has just stayed the order by the Manhattan-based Court of International Trade.”
He continued: “The ruling by the US Court of International Trade is so wrong, and so political! Hopefully, the Supreme Court will reverse this horrible, country threatening decision, QUICKLY and DECISIVELY.”
Earlier this week, the Distilled Spirits Council of the US (Discus) expressed its concerns about President Trump’s threat of a 50% levy on imports from the European Union.
