A raft of beverage alcohol brand owners have signed up to a new consortium that aims to accelerate the move to net zero along the industry’s supply chain.

Founded and run by energy solution provider Enel X, REfresh Alliance has been designed to “combine the expertise and resources of its members” particularly around Scope 3 emissions. The organisation will connect its members to renewable energy providers in the hope it will “provide cost-effective … solutions … in a way that can’t be achieved through individual action”.

The companies that have signed up at launch are:

  • Bacardi
  • BlueTriton
  • Carlsberg
  • Constellation Brands
  • Diageo
  • Heineken
  • Molson Coors Beverage Co
  • Pernod Ricard
  • The Coca-Cola Co, and
  • Whyte & Mackay

Membership requires a fee to be paid, a spokesperson confirmed to Global Drinks Intel, although more specific details were not divulged.

The alliance will start with a focus on renewable energy markets across Europe and North America before looking to expand further.

“Scope 3 emissions are one of the biggest challenges that the industry faces in delivering on our net zero ambitions,” said Heineken’s chief procurement officer, Hervé Le Faou. “We must work together to identify areas of our supply chains where we can pool our resources to accelerate this transition for our suppliers.

“We look forward to working with other beverage companies to achieve this and accelerate the decarbonization of our industry.”

Further details on the REfresh Alliance can be found on the organisation’s website.

Among the winners of this year’s ESG Awards from Global Drinks Intel was Australian Vintage, which was recognised for transitioning to renewable electricity across all of its sites this year.
