Sparkling-wine giant Henkell Freixenet has announced an extension of one of its largest brands into the spirits category for the first time.
Positioned as a “Mediterranean aperitivo”, Freixenet Solare has been lined up for a launch into 15 markets next month. Carrying an ABV of 11%, the SKU contains an unspecified spirit base along with Spanish lemon, clementine and rosemary in its botanical mix.
An alcohol-free version of Solare is also in the pipeline, scheduled to debut in June.
Among the markets to take delivery of the extension are Belgium, France, Germany, Lithuania, Spain and Switzerland, with the SRP set at EUR12.99 (US$15.40) per 70cl bottle. The recommended serve, the ‘Solare Spritz’, consists of three parts Freixenet cava, two parts Solare and one part sparkling water.
“The new product combines modern enjoyment with high brand recognition – and expands our portfolio with a category that is currently gaining in importance,” said group head of communications Vanessa Lehmann.
Speaking to Global Drinks Intel at last week’s Wine Paris trade show, Lehmann emphasised Henkell Freixenet’s recognition of the moderation trend among consumers. “Conscious alcohol consumption is no longer a niche trend but is developing into a relevant market segment with clear growth potential,” she said. “According to a representative study by Henkell Freixenet conducted in Germany, 60% of adults in Germany consume alcohol on special occasions such as celebrations or festive events.
“At the same time, 86% of consumers of alcoholic beverages are increasingly drinking in moderation, e.g., by abstaining during the week or switching to non-alcoholic alternatives.”
The group, formed through Henkell & Co’s purchase of a majority stake in Spanish cava producer Freixenet in 2018, already offers 0.0 versions of both the Henkell and Freixenet brands, while an alcohol-free extension of its Fürst von Metternich riesling wine is due in the coming weeks.
“We see alcohol‑free offerings as a natural extension of our portfolio, delivering high-quality and thoughtful concepts that inspire renewed enthusiasm for conscious enjoyment,” Lehmann added.
