Carlsberg has set aside a sizable funding stream for one of its breweries in India.

The company, which secured outright ownership of its division in the country last year, will spend a total of INR6bn (US$69m) on the Mysuru brewery in the southern state of Karnataka. Building on the initial commitment to invest INR3.5bn, Carlsberg’s decision to increase the amount will boost capacity at the facility as well as introduce new can, glass and keg lines.

Carlsberg India, which was run a joint venture in partnership with CSAPL (Singapore) Holding prior to last year’s takeover, said the move will “reinforce (its) role as a key player in the Indian beer industry”.

“Karnataka is a key market for Carlsberg India, and this expansion underscores our long-term commitment to the state,” said unit MD Nilesh Patel. “Our investment will not only support economic growth but also generate additional employment opportunities in the coming years.”

Details of when the project will complete on the site, which has a current annual production capacity of 800,000 hectolitres, were not disclosed.

In results for the 12 months of 2024, announced earlier this month, the group saw its ‘Central & Eastern Europe and India’ reporting region post a 7.8% year-on-year sales rise as the Tuborg Strong and Carlsberg Elephant brands drove growth across most states in the country.
