The top-line downturn continues for the eight-strong champagne group.

  • Second-half sales rise 3.1% to EUR167.6m (US$174.5m)
  • Slump of 19.5% in first six months of 2024 pulls full-year sales down by 6% to EUR255.4m

A slight lift in sales from the second half of last year has failed to offset the near-20% tumble recorded by champagne group Lanson-BCC in H1.

The company, which comprises eight maisons in the Champagne region including Boizel, Lanson and Philipponnat, saw sales in the six months to the end of December come in up by just over 3% on the corresponding period a year earlier. Despite the impressive showing, the six-month performance was undone by H1’s 19.5% decline.

Subsequently, 2024 delivered a decrease in year-on-year sales for Lanson-BCC of 6%, almost matching 2023’s -6.1%.

Like its peer Vranken-Pommery Monopole, which this week booked a 10.5% drop in 2024 sales, Lanson-BCC leant into figures from trade association Comité Champagne indicating a 9.2% volumes decline across all champagne exports last year. Noting that its overseas volumes decline was “in line with the market”, the group said the category’s performance “reflects a persistent inflationary environment and global geopolitical uncertainties, which continue to weigh on consumption”.

Domestic sales – France accounts for 47.4% of the company’s volumes – came in flat at +0.7%, while exports (52.6% of volumes) slipped by 11.8%. The UK was blamed specifically, alongside “residual overstock and subdued consumption”.

Last year was the group’s worst for sales since 2020, although the 12 months finished just ahead of 2019’s EUR250.3m.
