The decision, announced yesterday, has been taken “to service our customers more effectively”, a company spokesperson said. Operations at the site in Newbridge, on the western outskirts of Edinburgh, will transfer to C&C’s facility in Cambuslang near Glasgow, 35 miles away.
“The majority of colleagues impacted by this proposal are being offered alternative employment and a consultation process is currently underway as we seek to provide all necessary support and minimise any job losses,” the spokesperson added. “This proposal … is expected to conclude by the end of June, with no anticipated impact on customer service.”
According to trade union Unite, 41 jobs would be transferred as a result, “but even this figure will mean more than half the jobs are axed and is dependent on whether people can travel … to Cambuslang”.
C&C Group, which also produces the Magners cider brand (known as Bulmers in Ireland), acquired the Tennent’s brand and its assets from Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2009. The purchase included ABI’s businesses across Scotland as well as in Northern Ireland and Ireland.
