E&J Gallo Winery has added yet more to its Californian presence, acquiring Hahn Family Wines in the state’s Central Coast region.

The privately-owned wine giant, which has been on something of a shopping spree of late, has spent an undisclosed sum on 44-year-old Hahn. Included in the transaction are the Smith & Hook, Hahn and Hahn SLH brands, although the family will retain ownership of its “vineyard assets”.

“The Hahn Family Wines portfolio includes Smith & Hook, which has long stood for spirited, layered, and luscious Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux red blends from Paso Robles and the Central Coast,” Gallo said. “It also includes Hahn wines, which are rooted in the terroir of Monterey County and offer a fresh, approachable style in an array of varietals, and the Hahn SLH wines which showcase the character of the Santa Lucia Highlands.”

GM of commercial brands Steve Carlotti added: “This acquisition reinforces Gallo’s strategy for continued growth while supporting our goal of delivering superior quality at great value to our consumers across all usage occasions.”

In recent weeks, Gallo, which is headquartered in Modesto in California, has bought 9%-ABV RTD brand Fishers Island Lemonade as well as canned wine and spritzer business Bev, both of whom also hail from the US.
