Rémy Cointreau has marked ‘Earth Day’ this week by unveiling what it claims is “the world’s first ultra-lightweight standard champagne bottle”.
Produced in partnership with France-based glass manufacturer Verallia, the bottle weighs in at 800 grams and will come into circulation for the group’s Champagne Telmont brand. Telmont’s Réserve Brut SKU is switching to the lighter pack in the US from this month.
The bottle, which was adopted for the Réserve Brut three years ago at the commencement of its aging process, is 35g lighter than the standard weight for champagne bottles, according to the brand owner. The move “requires no modifications to production processes or existing manufacturing equipment”, Rémy added.
“By adopting this ultra-lightweight bottle, we aim to redefine industry standards and contribute to a more sustainable future for champagne,” said Telmont president Ludovic du Plessis. “We aim with this new bottle to set a new standard for champagne … .”
Last year, Diageo trialled a 180g bottle – the weight does not include the closure – for the Blue Label expression from blended scotch flagship Johnnie Walker. While the technology to mass-produce the bottle was “not yet available”, the brand owner offered industry-wide access to the concept through a royalty-free licence.
