Pernod Ricard’s Mumm brand has unveiled the design of a Champagne that will be available on spaceflights in the coming years.
Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar is the result of a five-year project at the Champagne house that has been joined by human spaceflight provider Axiom Space. The varietal, which has been produced with consideration to being consumed at high altitude, “has now achieved full compliance with space cargo specifications and AOC Champagne regulations”, the company said this week.
While the glass bottle is encased with “aeronautical-grade” aluminium, the stopper for Cordon Rouge Stellar comprises a cork and a steel opening-closing device.
“Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar will join Axiom’s upcoming crewed missions to low Earth orbit and extend the collaboration to Axiom Station, the world’s first commercial space station, to test and discover the tasting ritual in the real conditions of space,” Maison Mumm said, although specific dates for flights were not disclosed.
A report in this month’s issue of Global Drinks Intel magazine noted that global warming is providing Champagne producers with a quality boost although volumes are being negatively impacted.
