Moët Hennessy has added another Californian winery to its portfolio through the purchase of Joseph Phelps Vineyards.
The transaction, for an undisclosed fee, sees the 230-hectare, 13-vineyard business join Moet’s footprint in the US state. The wine and spirits group’s Chandon business has been operating in California since 1973, the same year Joseph Phelps founded his namesake winery.
As well as the vineyards, situated in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, Moet will assume control of Joseph Phelps’ brands, including ultra-premium Insignia. The 2018 vintage of the Bordeaux-style red blend is available on the company’s website at US$315 per 75cl bottle.
As well as brands such as Hennessy Cognac and Dom Perignon Champagne, Moet’s wine portfolio also includes Cloudy Bay in New Zealand and Argentina’s Terrazas de Los Andes, along with Chateau d’Yquem and Chateau Galoupet in France. Nine years ago, the group’s wine division ventured to China to release the first vintage from Ao Yun in Yunnan province.
