Despite an improvement on last year, 2025 is expected to mark the third consecutive year of below-average production.

Forecasts for global wine production in 2025 have been released, with output expected to recover slightly from last year’s historic low – although annual volumes remain “well below recent averages”.

Figures published this week by the International Organisation of Vine & Wine (OIV) estimate world wine production between 228m and 235m hectolitres, with a mid-point of 232m. If realised, then the estimated performance would represent a modest 3% increase on 2024, but would still be around 7% below the five-year average.

The OIV said 2025 marks the third consecutive year of below-average production, “confirming a period of persistently reduced global supply impacted by climatic challenges and evolving consumption models”.

The European Union’s combined output is projected at 140m hectolitres, up 2% on last year but 8% below average. Italy is on course to retain the top spot as the world’s largest producer with 47.4m hl (+8%), while France suffered another historically small harvest at 35.9m hl (-16% vs five-year average), and Spain slipped 6% to 29.4m hl amid an ongoing drought in the country.

The US saw a partial rebound to 21.7m hl, while the collected Southern Hemisphere producing nations rose 7% to 49m hl, with stronger results from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil offsetting a sharp 10% fall in Chile.

“Against a backdrop of weakened global demand and elevated inventories in several mature markets, a third consecutive year of below-average production tends to ease pressure on stock rather than create widespread supply tension,” the OIV noted.

“Overall, 2025 points to a slightly tighter but still balanced global market, with price and trade effects likely to remain sector- and region-specific rather than generalised.”
