English wine group Chapel Down has confirmed the pending departure of CEO Andrew Carter three years after he started in the leadership role.

Carter, whose career in beverage alcohol dates back to 1996, has informed the company of his intention to assume the same position at Timothy Taylor’s Brewery in the north of the country. The news has prompted the start of a recruitment process, with Carter set to remain in post “until we appoint his successor” at some point in the first half of next year.

Prior to starting with Chapel Down in September 2021, Carter spent almost seven years with Heineken from 1996 to late 2002 and worked for Bacardi between 2005 and 2012, rising to become MD of the global travel retail division. He was also CCO for Treasury Wine Estates across Europe, the Middle East & Africa and Asia Pacific.

“Under Andrew’s visionary leadership, Chapel Down has reached incredible heights, achieving numerous strategic milestones and celebrating remarkable success,” the listed group said today. “His dedication and passion have truly shaped our journey and we are deeply grateful for his contributions.”

In June, Chapel Down launched a strategic review that “will consider all alternatives, including … a sale of the company”. Sales in the first six months of 2024 came in down 11% on the corresponding period last year at GBP7.1m (US$9.3m).
