Privately-owned Bronco Wine Co has purchased the remaining stake it didn’t own in local peer Wine Hooligans.

The California-based company, which has been the majority shareholder in Wine Hooligans since 2023, will assume full responsibility for the latter’s Portlandia, Shortbread and Broadside wine brands as well as alcohol-removed wine Sea Monster. Bronco will also gain the 14-year-old business’ production and BevZero de-alcoholising sites in Santa Rosa, but not BevZero’s Spanish and South African facilities.

Financial details about the transaction, conducted through an auction process, were not disclosed.

The majority of Wine Hooligans’ employees will continue as Bronco employees.

“With this acquisition, we are excited to continue the legacy of Wine Hooligans and further integrate these exceptional brands and team members into Bronco Wine Co,” said Bronco CEO Dominic Engels.

Engels was appointed last year following Daniel Leonard’s retirement after 38 years with Bronco, the last two of which were as CEO. Engels’ career, which includes time with McKinsey & Co and Pom Wonderful, saw him spend four years (2016-2020) heading up San Diego craft beer company Stone Brewing. He joined Bronco from Revolution Foods, for whom he had been CEO since late 2021.
