The owner of France-based wine group Boisset Collection has acquired Napa Valley’s Artesa Estate from Spain’s Raventós Codorníu.
The transaction includes a 350-acre estate with 155 acres of vines in the Los Carneros and Mt Vedeer regions in southern Napa Valley. Jean-Charles Boisset, the president of his family’s producer & importer business, said he plans to place “renewed emphasis on sparkling wine” at Artesa as well as “continued exploration of the estate’s still-wine potential”.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Global Drinks Intel has asked whether the winery has been purchased by Boisset Collection or by Jean-Charles Boisset personally.
The property features pyramid-shaped architecture (top) and landscaped gardens, which Boisset plans to turn into a “destination for the art world” with “artistic initiatives and guest experiences”.
“For all its extraordinary achievements, I believe Napa Valley is still at the beginning of what it can become,” Boisset said. “I am committing myself to Artesa Estate with the perspective of vintages and generations. I feel more drawn to California, more curious about the future of wine and more energised to build here than ever.”
Codorníu’s CEO, Sergio Fuster, added: “Artesa has played a significant role in the history of Raventós Codorníu, and it is one of the most successful wineries in our portfolio. We are convinced that Boisset is the ideal custodian to guide the winery through its next phase of development.
“Their in-depth knowledge of the local market will unlock Artesa’s extraordinary potential even further, while ensuring the continuity of its legacy.”
Founded in Burgundy, Boisset Collection has a growing US portfolio, including nearby Buena Vista Winery, which it purchased in 2011, as well as Oakville Grocery & Wine Merchant, the Calistoga Depot Restaurant & Distillery, Raymond Vineyards, DeLoach Vineyards, wine bar JCB St Helena and Elizabeth Spencer Winery – all of which are situated in California.
Jean-Charles and his wife, Gina Gallo-Boisset of the Gallo family, also privately own Flora Springs Winery in St Helena in the state.
