Aperitifs and liqueurs with Mediterranean cues are surrounded by growth opportunities this Summer, according to an article in this month’s Global Drinks Intel magazine.
As the world continues to emerge from the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic and its subsequent restrictions, brand owners such as Aperol’s Campari Group are making positive noises for the future of aperitifs and liqueurs. While the reopening of the on-premise channel bodes well for alcohol more broadly, the category is also benefiting from the continuing popularity of classic cocktails, a trend that has been accelerated as consumers experimented with cocktails at home during lockdowns.
At the same time, moves towards moderating alcohol consumption are bringing ‘spritz’ serves into view, a trend well-served by Aperol, for example.
Meanwhile, the recovery of tourism to locations such as southern Europe following enforced time at home will see more consumers return from their holidays later this year with a better idea of the aperitifs and liqueurs produced in the region.
“The current trading climate is not without its challenges,” notes category commentator Joe Bates in this month’s issue of Global Drinks Intel. “The war in Ukraine, the rising costs and scarcity of raw materials as well as soaring packaging and logistics bills are causes for concern.
“Despite these headwinds,” Bates continues, “suppliers are generally happy that business has returned to a semblance of normality.”
