Ohio-based Middle West Spirits has expanded its operations westward, agreeing the takeover of American whiskey producer Old Elk Distillery.
Middle West, which owns the namesake American whiskey and bourbon brand as well as Oyo vodka and Vim & petal and Lux & Umbra gins, has spent an undisclosed sum on Colorado’s Old Elk. The transaction has been framed as “securing the future” of Old Oak, which came into being in 2017.
“This is a meaningful moment for both our teams,” said Middle West’s CEO, Ryan Lang. “Old Elk has built a respected … brand with staying power, thanks to a distinct blending and innovation philosophy that complements our grain-to-glass production model. Their agility … pairs naturally with our technical approach and scale.
“Together, we’re not just expanding – we’re joining forces to preserve what makes each brand special while unlocking new potential.”
Old Elk CEO Luis Gonzalez added: “This acquisition isn’t just a milestone, it’s a launchpad. We’re securing the future of the Old Elk legacy with dedicated production and a true home for our brand … . Joining the Middle West family is a powerful step forward – together, we’re ready to shake things up and make bold moves.”
Commencing operations in 2008, privately-owned Middle West claims to be the largest distiller in Ohio following a recent production capacity increase, details of which were not immediately available.
Speaking to Global Drinks Intel earlier this year, the co-founder of Kentucky’s Limestone Branch Distillery warned of an imminent “shakeout” within the American whiskey category. “There are a lot of headwinds against spirits,” Stephen Beam said. “I think there will be a contraction of national and international brands coming down the pipe.”
