‘This investment represents an interesting opportunity to support the development of an emerging local brand with … a distinctive positioning within the flavoured-spirits category.’

La Martiniquaise-Bardinet has acquired a minority holding in Street Liquors, the Spanish start-up behind liqueur mark Plata o Plomo, for an undisclosed sum.

The transaction, for a 40% stake in the six-year-old business, was conducted by the group’s local unit Bardinet España. According to LMB, Plata o Plomo is a flavoured spirit “made from tropical fruit juices with a slightly spicy touch”.

LMB will assume distribution responsibilities for the brand domestically, while production and bottling will be “aligned with the group’s industrial standards”. As well as deploying its international market presence “to accelerate global expansion”, LMB has also secured the option to increase its holding in Street Liquors within the next three years.

“Plata o Plomo has become very fashionable in the north of Spain and is experiencing strong momentum thanks to its original taste profile and connection with younger consumers looking for new drinking experiences,” said Bardinet España CEO Jean-Paul Bouyat.

“For Bardinet España, this investment represents an interesting opportunity to support the development of an emerging local brand with strong growth potential and a distinctive positioning within the flavoured-spirits category.”

Plata o Plomo, which translates into English as ‘silver or lead’, has an ABV of 20% and is available online for EUR15.75 (US$18.36) per 70cl bottle. Little information is disclosed about its ingredients or production methods, and its marketing plays on this secrecy.

Street Liquors was founded in Navarre in northern Spain by siblings Iñaki and Belate Beunza.

Last year, the Cutty Sark blended scotch owner bought a majority holding in UK-based gin maker Warner’s Distillery.
