United Spirits, the Indian business unit of Diageo, is set to cease operations at its Hyderabad manufacturing unit in Nacharam, Telangana.

When contacted by Global Drinks Intel today (7 February) a Diageo spokesperson confirmed local reports, adding that “operational costs” and “changing market dynamics made the unit unviable”. The Nacharam factory was established in 1970 and had undergone “significant efforts, including investments in expansion and optimisation”.

According to United Spirits’ latest annual report for 2023-2024, the business also owns a manufacturing facility in Malkajgiri, Hyderabad. The division also owns nine other manufacturing sites across India.

“In alignment with the company’s Voluntary Separation Scheme, management has offered a generous entitlement to all 192 workers, prioritising their best interests and wellbeing,” said the Diageo spokesperson. “This offer has been accepted by the workers’ union.”

Last month, the Guinness and Johnnie Walker brand owner revealed it is switching out its India CEO with Hina Nagarajan set to be replaced by Praveen Someshwar. Details of where Nagarajan will move to were not disclosed, although the group said she will take up “another position on Diageo’s global executive committee”.
