The UK-based craft distiller claims the system will boost local biodiversity while also reducing waste.

English whisky producer Cotswolds Distillery has unveiled a ‘Wetlands Ecological Treatment System’ that can sustainably process three-quarters of the wastewater from its production facility.

The processed wastewater will create a biodiverse habitat for local wildlife, the company claimed, while reducing the amount of tanker trucks and local traffic. The project was funded by London-based wine & spirits retailer Berry Bros & Rudd, which is an investor in Cotswolds Distillery.

Covering nearly two acres of former marshland at the distillery site, the system can process spent, leftover lees from spirit distillation as well as water used for rinsing tanks, floors and cleaning along with wash water waste.

Cotswolds Distillery has forecast the new system will reduce production waste by “tens of thousands of litres per week”.

“We have been looking for ways to improve our waste management and a wetlands treatment system seemed like the perfect solution,” said founder Dan Szor.

Berry Bros. & Rudd took an undisclosed stake in the Cotswolds Distillery in April last year, not only to fund the company’s sustainability project but also to accelerate its international expansion plans.
