Rémy Cointreau has recruited three of its international spirits brands to front pilot programmes to reduce its use of glass bottles.

The trials, which are the latest activations from the company’s ‘One Bottle for Eternity’ project, feature the Cointreau liqueur, rum brand Mount Gay and high-end Cognac Louis XIII. According to Rémy, the wider aim is to reduce its “per bottle” carbon emissions from 2kg to 1kg by 2030.

Cointreau and Mount Gay will both be made available to the UK’s on-premise channel in 4.5-litre ‘eco-totes’ through a partnership with Ecospirits. Selected outlets in London will be offered the packs, which once used will be collected, cleaned and refilled. In Barbados, meanwhile, a deposit system will be trialled for Mount Gay’s bottles.

As for Louis XIII, consumers can have their empty decanters refilled at the Cognac’s branded retail outlets worldwide. “The ceremony is personalised,” said Rémy, “and the life of the decanter is extended indefinitely.” Louis XIII has four ’boutiques’, three in China and one in Harrods in London.

Earlier this week, Diageo confirmed a tie-up with glass manufacturer Encirc to “create the world’s first net-zero glass bottles at scale by 2030”.
