The five-year project by Tierra de Agaves will optimise resources and cut down on waste.

High-end tequila brand Casa Obsidiana has seen production partner Tierra de Agaves complete its ‘Green Circle’ production model project by introducing organic fertiliser to feed its agave fields.

Created at an on-site composting plant at the distillery in the town of Tequila, the fertiliser replaces synthetic fertilisers to create a better-growing environment for the agave plants, according to Tierra de Agaves CEO – and Obsidiana master distiller – Francisco Quijano. The initiative forms part of a wider project initiated by Tierra de Agaves in 2019 to mitigate the environmental impact of producing tequila.

In addition to the construction of the composting facility, Tierra de Agaves has also built a bio-digester to turn vinasses, a bi-product of the cooked agave used to make tequila, into water that can then be used for irrigation. The distillery claims to have effectively created a self-sustaining system where resources are optimised and waste is minimised.

Late last year, Casa Obsidiana was launched online and in the US states of Texas and California by Mexico’s Beckmann Gonzalez family and the Boisset family of France and California. The range comprises blanco, reposado and añejo expressions, aged in ex-French wine barrels from Boisset’s wineries.

Tierra de Agaves also produces Heaven Hill Brands’ Lunazul tequila brand.

‘I see huge competition in ultra-premium Tequila over the next two to three years’ – Tierra de Agaves CEO & master distiller for Heaven Hill Brands’ Lunazul Tequila Francisco Quijano speaks to Global Drinks Intel
