Bacardi has taken a major step towards its target greenhouse gas emission reduction target at the namesake rum brand’s distillery in the US.

The group has a pledge in place to cut the GHG emissions from its production facilities in half by 2025. This week’s opening of a combined heat and power system at the distillery in Cataño, Puerto Rico, will bring brand Bacardi’s emissions down by 50%.

According to the company, the system switches out “heavy fuel oil” for propane gas. All of the energy required for the facility will come from the environmental upgrade.

The Puerto Rico site, which commenced operations in 1958, is the “largest premium rum distillery in the world, Bacardi claims. The facility already captures 95% of its heat generation and will start to supply carbon dioxide from the fermentation process to carbonated drinks producers on the island.

Earlier this week, the group’s GTR lead, Leila Stansfield, highlighted the ongoing focus in the sales channel for its Patron Tequila brand. Speaking at the TFWA World Exhibition & Conference in Cannes, Stansfield said Patron is poised to become Bacardi’s second-biggest GTR brand in sales terms, adding that it is also the super-premium Tequila market leader in the channel.

The El Cielo expression, which has been on sale in domestic markets worldwide since April, is in the process of being rolled out worldwide in GTR for around US$225 per bottle, the unit’s MD added.
