Italian wine group Marchesi Antinori has purchased Arcadia Vineyard in California’s Napa Valley through its Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars business in the US state.

The transaction, for an undisclosed fee, reunites the two Californian wine producers after 18 years apart. The Winiarski family, who founded Stag’s Leap in 1970, sold the company in 2007, the majority heading to Ste Michelle Wine Estates with Marchesi Antinori buying 15%. Antinori acquired full control of the almost-300 acre site and all related assets 19 months ago.

Warren Winiarski, who recently passed away, purchased Coombsville AVA-based Arcadia in 1996.

Comprising 135 acres, 84 of which are planted to vines, Arcadia is situated next to Stag’s Leap near Yountville in Napa. The vineyard is divided between cabernet sauvignon (59 acres), chardonnay (22 acres) and merlot (three acres).

“We are beyond thrilled to have acquired this stunning vineyard in such a special place,” Antinori’s COO for the US, Juan Munoz-Oca. “The unique terroir of Coombsville AVA promises to elevate the expression of our wines and align the style to Warren’s original vision while meeting the quality expectations set in place by the Antinori family when we took full ownership of the winery back in the summer of 2023.”

Treasury Wine Estates hit the headlines in California in October 2023, spending up to US$1bn on Daou Vineyards in Paso Robles.
