The outlook for prosecco for the rest of the year has brightened after the wine’s official trade association unveiled promising figures for last month.

Over 500,000 hectolitres of prosecco wine were bottled last month, according to the Consorzio di Tutela Prosecco DOC, representing a year-on-year lift of 12.6%.

The exact figure – 513,569 hectolitres – has only previously been reached once in the denomination’s history. The total for the first seven months of 2024 is around 2.83m hectolitres, a 5.2% increase over the same period of 2023.

“This record is proof that consumers continue to recognise Prosecco DOC as a product of excellence, appreciated … by people of all ages,” said the trade association’s president, Giancarlo Guidolin. “I am truly proud of these achievements, which reflect the … relentless work of the entire supply chain, including producers, winemakers, and bottlers.

“These results reward the Consorzio’s efforts in protection, promotion and enhancement … , a focus on sustainability and innovation: qualities evidently essential for the denomination’s longevity.”

In 2023, prosecco exports totalled EUR1.66bn (US$1.81bn), a 5% rise over the previous year, but volumes dipped 3% to 3.65m hectolitres, largely as a result of reduced demand in the US. While Italy remains prosecco’s largest market, the UK and the US still remain key to the wine’s long-term fortunes.
