The head of ESG not-for-profit the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking, Henry Ashworth, has left the industry-led association after seven years.

Ashworth, who started as president of IARD at the start of 2017, has joined management services provider Potash Global Strategy this week as MD. The move brings to an end his 12-year career in beverage alcohol, having been chief executive of UK-based Portman Group between 2011 and 2016.

Confirming Ashworth’s departure to Global Drinks Intel today, a spokesperson for IARD, whose 13 members include Anheuser-Busch InBev, Diageo, Heineken and Pernod Ricard, was not immediately able to provide succession details.

In an exclusive interview with Global Drinks Intel earlier this year, Ashworth described the COVID-19 pandemic as “an extraordinary, natural experiment where lots of what people thought were the standardised ways of doing things have turned out not to be”.

“There’s been a noticeable trend in some countries, for instance, where people are drinking less, but harms from alcohol have been going up,” he said. “That shouldn’t happen, according to the public health model.”
