Guala Closures is hoping to increase its presence at beer, spirits and wine’s higher-end through the purchase of Italian “luxury segment” closure specialist Labrenta.

The transaction, for an undisclosed sum, will result in Labrenta being folded into Guala’s operations. The acquirer expects to “generate important synergies both at the industrial and commercial level, by offering a full range of products for the fast-growing luxury sector”.

Founded in Vicenza in the northeast of Italy 51 years ago, Labrenta produces ‘tailor-made’ closures for beer, spirits and wine brand owners. Earlier this year, the company, which boasts annual sales in the region of EUR30m (US$30.5m), made a purchase of its own, buying cork closure manufacturer Anacorks in Portugal.

As well as the facility in Italy, Guala will also assume ownership of Labrenta’s sites in Brazil and Mexico along with a “commercial branch” in the US.

Guala, which is owned by Special Packaging Solutions Investments, has its headquarters in Milan. Total sales last year came in at EUR659.8m.
