Bacardi has received legal papers from Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter, its partner in the D’Usse Cognac brand.
A filing has been submitted to Delaware Chancery Court in the US in which Carter has requested financial and production information from Bacardi about D’Usse. According to celebrity gossip website TMZ, which claims to have seen the filing, Carter is “demanding total financial clarity from Bacardi” about the brand.
Nobody at Bacardi was immediately available for comment when contacted today by Global Drinks Intel.
The Dewar’s and Grey Goose owner partnered with Carter’s SC Liquor business in 2011 to set up D’Usse as a joint venture. The brand’s VSOP expression retails in the US for around US$44 per 75cl bottle with the XO iterations costing in the region of $140.
Earlier this month, spirits rival – and Cognac brand owner – Moet Hennessy noted in its latest set of quarterly results that Hennessy has been helped by “the firm policy of price increases across all regions”. The brand’s performance had been hindered, however, by logistical issues in the US.
