Sales volumes for Champagne demonstrated a healthy showing in the 12 months of 2022, rising by 1.6% on the year prior.
Figures released this week by trade association Comité Champagne show shipments totalling 326m bottles. The year-on-year lift follows 2021’s 31% leap in global shipments. albeit compared to the COVID-dominated year before.
According to the organisation, Champagne’s domestic volumes dipped 1.7% to 138.4m units, while exports to the rest of the world came in at 187.5m bottles, a rise of 4.3%.
While crediting the winding down of pandemic-driven restrictions for the increase last year, the committee reserved praise for the 2022 harvest, “which was remarkable both for its quantity and quality [and] is going to play a role in rebuilding stocks to meet market demand”.
While volumes to individual markets were not detailed, the main headline a year ago was the confirmation of the US as Champagne’s biggest overseas destination, outstripping the UK in terms of both volume and value.
