The International Alliance for Responsible Drinking has secured buy-in from companies outside of the beverage alcohol industry for its new ‘Global Standards Coalition’.

The brand owner-funded and -led not-for-profit trumpeted the likes of Meta, Ubereats and Walmart as having signed up to its new code. Signatories, which include “80 leading retailers and e-commerce and digital platforms”, will commit to implementing measures designed to prevent sales of alcohol to underage and/or intoxicated consumers worldwide.

The coalition also covers marketing activity and will “provide training and guidance that empowers staff to deny sale, service and delivery of alcohol where necessary”.

“This initiative … will be pivotal in driving change in society through public and private partnership as part of a whole-of-society approach,” said IARD CEO Henry Ashworth. “By harnessing our resources alongside those of policymakers, regulators, healthcare professionals and societal leaders, we can accelerate positive downwards trends in underage drinking.

“We invite others to join us in this global initiative to reduce harmful drinking.”

IARD has 13 member companies – Anheuser-Busch InBev, Asahi, Bacardi, Beam Suntory, Brown-Forman, Carlsberg, Diageo, Heineken, Kirin, Moët Hennessy, Molson Coors Beverage Co, Pernod Ricard and William Grant & Sons.
