Anheuser-Busch InBev has lined up a sustainability spend at its brewery on the far east coast of Canada.

The facility, which is the home of production for 14 of the group’s brands, will benefit from a CAD10.5m (US$7.6m) investment. Labatt Breweries of Canada will use the money for a packaging system that will eliminate the use of plastic packaging rings on multi-packs from the brewery in St John’s, the capital of Canada’s Newfoundland and Labrador province.

The move to paperboard packaging for six- and eight-packs is forecast to result in the removal of around 24,000kg of plastic per year.

“As we continue our journey towards the elimination of single-use plastic in our operations, this investment in paperboard packaging in our operations is proof of that,” said Lbatt’s Atlantic Breweries’ director of corporate affairs, Wade Keller.

A-B InBev’s production footprint in Canada comprises six facilities, in Creston, Edmonton, Halifax, London and Montreal as well as St. John’s.

Late last year, Carlsberg redrew the competitive landscape in Canada, spending CAD144m (then-US$106m) on Waterloo Brewing in Ontario.
