A raft of formal organisations in the US have backed the federal government’s recent revision of its alcohol consumption guidance.

Earlier this week, the US departments of health & human services and of agriculture adjusted the advice to the country’s adult consumers, recommending they aim to “consume less alcohol for better overall health”, replacing previous guidance of one or two drinks per day. The Distilled Spirits Council of the US (Discus) has since said the revised guidelines reaffirm existing advice rather than represent a fundamental shift in position.

The trade body shared comments from the Science Over Bias Coalition – representing agriculture, beverage and hospitality interests – which said: “The Dietary Guidelines’ longstanding, overarching advice is that if alcohol is consumed, it should be done in moderation.

“These updated guidelines, underpinned by the preponderance of scientific evidence, reaffirm this important guidance.”

In February last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) added its voice to the rising demand for cancer-related warning labels to feature on alcoholic beverages, this time in Europe.
