Tilray Brands has confirmed its intention to wind down the brewing operations at Terrapin Beer Co in the US, but plans to leave the site’s taproom open.

Production at the brewery in Athens, Georgia, will cease on 25 September, the Canadian alcoholic & THC-infused beverage group has confirmed to Global Drinks Intel. The move forms part of ‘Project 420’, an initiative introduced last year to consolidate Tilray’s “craft-beverage” operations and cut costs.

The details of where Terrapin’s portfolio will be brewed going forward were not immediately available/

A spokesperson said the Terrapin taproom, warehouse and “repack operations” in Athens would remain open. The decision to cease brewing was described as “part of our ongoing efforts to optimise our brewing network and support our long-term operating model”.

“With robust brewing operations across the country, this transition allows us to continue serving customers efficiently while leveraging the scale and capabilities of our broader brewery footprint,” the spokesperson added.

“Terrapin remains a beloved brand and continues to play an important role in our craft beer portfolio. Our commitment to the brand, its consumers and the important role Terrapin continues to play within our portfolio remains unchanged.”

In June, Tilray was reported to be selling Atwater Brewery, less than two years after purchasing the US business from Molson Coors Beverage Co.

In March, the Ontario-headquartered company agreed a cut-price deal to acquire Scottish brewer BrewDog in a pre-pack administration transaction for just GBP33m (US$44.5m). A month prior, it secured the licence to produce, market, sell and distribute the Carlsberg, Carlsberg Elephant,1664 and Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc beers in the US.
