Gallo is reportedly suspending grape-crushing operations at one of its facilities in California, although the site will continue to blend and bottle wine for the group.

The US wine giant told Wine Business earlier this week that its suspension of crush operations at the Turner Road site, in Lodi, “reflects available capacity in our other wineries in the region”. The Barefoot brand owner said it is providing “transition support” to affected employees, “including the opportunity to explore other roles within the organisation”.

Global Drinks Intel has contacted Gallo for confirmation of the suspension.

The latest development follows Gallo’s closure in February of The Ranch Winery in California, with workers simultaneously laid off across four of the company’s other sites in the state. Gallo said at the time that the permanent closure of its St Helena-based winery, plus the other redundancies, would result in a combined 93 job losses, including winemakers and cellar and hospitality staff.

The redundancies will take place up until the end of January next year.
