Australian Vintage has reduced the weight of its McGuigan brand’s Burgundy-shape bottle by a quarter, to 300g.
The new bottle has been developed by glass manufacturer Verallia and will be packed at Greencroft Bottling in the UK. McGuigan Wines’ Black Label Sauvignon Blanc is available now in UK retail multiple Sainsbury’s in the new 300g pack.
An initial rollout for the bottle is set to apply to around 596,000 nine-litre cases of wine from Australian Vintage this year. Global Drinks Intel has contacted the Tempus brand owner for more information on the launch, including which other markets the bottle will be available in.
The B-Corp certified company estimates the innovation will reduce CO₂ emissions for its Burgundy-bottle production by 82,000kg annually.
“By introducing this innovative packaging solution ahead of the market, McGuigan Wines and Australian Vintage are strengthening their position as leaders in sustainable practices while responding to growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly products,” the company said in a statement.
“This development represents an important milestone in lowering the environmental footprint of wine production, without compromising the high-quality standards for which McGuigan Wines is internationally recognised.”
Earlier this year, UK producer Crush Wines launched its French rosé brand Bijou in 410g bottles in what the company claimed was a world first for the flute-style pack.
