‘We found in Henkell Freixenet a trusted partner who will preserve our legacy while taking the company into the future.’

Henkell Freixenet has purchased the remaining shares of Freixenet from the cava brand’s founding family.

The sparkling wine giant was formed in 2018, when Germany’s Henkell & Co purchased a 50.67% stake in Spanish cava producer and brand owner Freixenet. The Ferrer and Bonet families, which owned the remaining shares in the business, have sold their holding to Henkell Freixenet in a transaction that completed yesterday (2 March).

Financial details were not disclosed.

“Together, we have strengthened our international market position in the global sparkling wine segment and opened new opportunities for Freixenet,” said Henkell Freixenet CEO Andreas Brokemper. “We greatly value the trust the Ferrer and Bonet families have placed in us.

“It is an honour to take on Freixenet and assume the responsibility of successfully developing the company into the future.”

Family members Pedro Ferrer and José Luis Bonet will remain with the group as honorary presidents, while Ferrer will also “continue to represent Freixenet in some institutions”.

Ferrer, who is also the owner of still wine producer Ferrer Wines – a separate business entity to Henkell Freixenet – added: “The sale of our shares marks an emotional moment for us. As two family-owned companies sharing the same values, we found in Henkell Freixenet a trusted partner who will preserve our legacy while taking the company into the future.

“At the same time, I am excited to continue developing Ferrer Wines and to shape the next chapter of our wine journey.”

Last month, the Mionetto Prosecco owner announced an extension of the Freixenet brand into the spirits category for the first time, with the Solare “Mediterranean aperitivo”.
