Radico Khaitan is making moves to acquire a scotch whisky distillery through a soon-to-be-created subsidiary in Scotland, the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) producer has revealed.
Late last week, the group’s board approved the proposal, which would create a wholly-owned division in the country. Included in the investment – the sum of which was not disclosed – would be the purchase of a currently-operating distillery, Radico stated in a filing with the BSE (formerly Bombay Stock Exchange).
The proposals include the purchase of distillation and maturation equipment and storage facilities along with scotch whisky, liquor and unspecified spirit, noted legal & company secretary Dinesh Kumar Gupta.
In financial terms, the board noted: “The company will initially subscribe to the minimum capital as may be necessary, at face value.”
The Delhi-headquartered company, which is one of India’s largest beverage alcohol companies, has created and built several whisky brands, including Rampur Indian single malt in 2016, followed by Royal Ranthambore in 2021 and ‘world malt whisky’ Sangam in March 2023.
Radico’s portfolio also includes vodka, rum, gin and brandy, with ‘millionaire brands’ – meaning annual sales of 1m-plus cases – 8PM and 8PM Premium whiskies, Contessa Rum and Magic Moments Vodka on its roster.
Last year, the group partnered with a group of Bollywood actors to launch D’Yavol Spirits, described as “a new-age alcobev company with a sharp focus on liquid excellence, disruptive design and cultural resonance”.
