Pernod Ricard has released details of a packaging innovation prototype for its Martell cognac brand.

The concept consists of a bottle made entirely from flat glass, more commonly associated with smartphones and high-end technology. Created in partnership with manufacturing specialist Vitalink Technology, the design applies techniques borrowed from sectors such as consumer electronics and Swiss watchmaking to produce an ‘ultra-light’ formed bottle.

The prototype uses ultra-thin flat glass folded and laser-welded into shape using a process described as “glass origami”, allowing for sharper angles, reduced material usage and improved strength-to-weight performance. The brand owner said the approach offers new design possibilities while enhancing clarity and visual presentation of the liquid.

Details about where the pack will be trialled and how long for were not immediately available. Global Drinks Intel has approached the brand owner for further information.

In May last year, Pernod Ricard confirmed that Philippe Neusch, the then director & operations VP for Martell, had left the group after just under two years in the role.
