Carlsberg has inaugurated a US$90m expansion of one of its brewing facilities in Vietnam, increasing capacity by 50% and making it the group’s largest production site in Asia.

The Phu Bai Brewery in the central city of Hué will support both the group’s international brands such as Carlsberg, 1664 Blanc, Tuborg and Somersby, alongside local labels, including Halida and Huda. According to the company, the facility has been designed to improve efficiency while lowering environmental impact, featuring a new brew line that reduces water use by 20% and energy by 15%, as well as AI-enabled electric forklifts and real-time data systems.

The brewery operates on renewable electricity and biomass-powered steam, with wastewater treated through advanced filtration. Carlsberg said the project aligns with its ‘Together Towards ZERO and Beyond’ ESG agenda as well as Vietnam’s net-zero 2050 goals. Targets include reaching a water efficiency rate of 2.0 hl/hl by 2026, eliminating landfill waste by the end of this year, and achieving net-zero emissions in production by 2028.

Phu Bai will also serve as a hub for Carlsberg’s move towards sustainable packaging in the country with a goal of ensuring 100% reusable or recyclable materials by 2026.

The group has been active in Vietnam since 1993, employing around 3,800 directly and indirectly.

In April, Carlsberg partnered its 1664 beer brand with urban fashion label CLOT across its “key Asian markets”.
