The Boston Beer Co CEO Michael Spillane is to step down from the role this month to focus on “important personal matters”.

Spillane will leave the position on 15 August, after 18 months at the helm of the Samuel Adams brand owner. He will be succeeded on an interim basis by founder, brewer and board chairman Jim Koch (below).

Spillane will remain on the board as a non-executive director, having served as a director since 2014. Koch, who founded Boston Beer in 1984, previously held the CEO role until 2001 and has remained board chair since.

Last month, the company reported a 1.5% rise in sales for the three months to the end of June. A Q1 increase in 2024 had previously been offset by a decline in Q2, leaving Boston Beer’s first-half sales for 2025 up 3.6%.
