Sazerac Co has collaborated with US-based Meridian Biotech to construct a byproduct conversion facility near its Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky.
The biotechnology business will invest US$40m into a system in Franklin County, creating around 35 jobs. The technology will convert post-distillation waste that will be piped from Buffalo Trace into “multifunctional alternative proteins”.
In its new form, the ‘stillage’ can be used in a variety of industries, including fish farming, pet foods and the production of organic fertiliser. Construction is expected to begin on the facility later this year.
Founded in 2017, Meridian Biotech, is an industrial biotechnology company based in Lexington, also in Kentucky.
Earlier this month, Sazerac revealed that supply chain & customer service VP Mitch Federman was in the process of assuming the position of COO.
