US giant Bronco Wine Co has recruited its next CEO as Daniel Leonard heads for his retirement.

The group, which claims to be “one of the largest privately held US vineyard holders” has appointed Dominic Engels (below) as its new lead. Engels started in the role last week following Leonard’s retirement after 38 years with Bronco, the last two of which were as CEO.

Engels’ career, which includes time with McKinsey & Co and Pom Wonderful, saw him spend four years (2016-2020) heading up San Diego craft beer company Stone Brewing. He joins California-headquartered Bronco, which has been celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, from Revolution Foods, for whom he had been CEO since late 2021.

“The wine industry is undergoing a massive shift right now,” said group chair Michael Franzia. “As a company, we need to continue to innovate across all facets of our business. The addition of Dom will help ensure we can meet consumers on their wine journey, be a leader in sustainability and continue delivering the highest quality wines for every occasion.”

Engels added: “The company’s strategic investments in … vertically integrated infrastructure and its … high-performing team have positioned it uniquely to build on its heritage. I look forward to working together to navigate today’s challenging industry landscape and to drive a bold, successful path forward.”

Last month, Treasury Wine Estates unveiled a new brand for the US market. Drop of Sunshine was created in partnership with a company founded by actor Reece Witherspoon.
